"Zack’s Machine"

USA
1.5 OUT OF 4 STARS

Humans were not the only victims on September 11. Beloved pets were also left behind with few ways to seek help.

Ken Sheetz brings the camera to floor level for a puppy's point of view. When her human companion leaves for work in the Towers on that fated day, canine Sophia senses distress from the calls arriving on Zack's answering machine.

Family and friends call in frustration and anguish from lack of communication (curious note: Ed Asner makes a vocal appearance as Zack's father), and a distant company worker performs an agonizing head count.

Sheetz' intentions are honorable, but the situation is all too simplified and the dramatics are over the top. Using a cute puppy feels like a cheap trick for sympathy, when no such ploys are necessary.

Ken Sheetz:

Tough review for a film that's already an official selection in 8 festivals and garnered the talents of 4 time Emmy winner Ed Anser based on how much he loved the film. Nothing curious about that.

As for sympathy being a cheap trick, this critic misses the point of the film entirely.

Go here if you are still curious as to why Ed Asner decided to be part of the cast for ZACK'S MACHINE:
