Creative genius Jim Henson proves there is life beyond the Muppets in this brilliant collection of German, Russian, and Celtic stories. Not the watered down Disney versions of fairytales, but the gritty, dark, devious tales told when life was a little harsher. The title character is masterfully portrayed by John Hurt, who in all of his intriguing glory introduces and narrates each story. His amusing canine sidekick is performed by puppet heir Brian Henson, who acts as the sole audience, booing the bad guys and questioning the storyteller when things become complex.

Henson beautifully combines various media, allowing shadowed figures to move in and out of the storyteller's home and the tale itself, walking across vases and over the floor. Puppetry, elaborate makeup, and animation help to illustrate these fantastic tales. Many directors lend their hands to guide these nine wonderful tales, and Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain) provides the screenplays. Many actors gladly disguise themselves, including Brenda Blethyn, Sean Bean, Jane Horrocks, French and Saunders, Alison Doody, Jonathan Pryce, and Joely Richardson.

The only DVD extras are trailers for other Henson films, but with all the beauty of this collection, it is a must for everyone.
