"The Pearce Sisters"

UK
4 OUT OF 4 STARS

What two fisherwomen hang in their smokehouse is their own business. Whether it was walking on their beach only hours before is another concern.

Director Luis Cook follows up a 1995 short with another Aardman Animations production. Aardman (home of Wallace & Gromit stop-motion genius Nick Park) knows how to spot talent, and Cook is no exception.

Isolation can drive people to odd rituals, and these sisters are no exception. Dialogue-free and animation heavy, the characters are harsh and unpleasant in appearance. Every detail is visible, from the strands in a bundle of fish nets to the rain beating on their weathered faces.

Though both seem to be a result of the land and their livelihood, one sister is salt of the earth while the other is decidedly more disturbing. The humor is dark, morbid and always entertaining.
