"The Girl Who Swallowed Bees"

Australia
3.5 OUT OF 4 STARS

The Jesus and Mary Chain were right -- with some girls, it really is just like honey.

In Paul McDermott's quirky tale, a morbid school girl follows in the footsteps of Beetlejuice's Lydia by focusing on the possibilities of death rather than the opportunities of life. Mixed media sends actress Pia Miranda into animated worlds to fight her darker demons and seek an end to her troubles.

Hugo Weaving does his best Dr. Suess impression as the narrator of the story's poem, relating the reasons why this young girl is driven to swallow a hive of bees. But her outlook changes when her blood flows like honey.

In turns delightfully bitter and saccharine, McDermott proves that the smallest bit of pollen can help a flower to grow.
