Whether streets are considered confining or paths towards escape determines the true character of kids in a busy city.
The best films are often those subject to interpretation. Director Howie Shia may have had a fate in mind for his two animated adventurers, but the ever-changing black and white world he drew them into becomes a sketch pad for possibilities.
Heavy watercolor clouds and buildings soon envelop passing zephyrs and budding constellations. A boy leaps over set boundaries as his friend lives out her actions through graffitied visions. The two kids seem to be living a life lost on surrounding city dwellers who are unable to view such possibilities.
The animation is mesmerizing and full of dramatic texture. By exploring the basics that skip the excess of many modern graphics, Shia builds layers rather than unnecessary burdens. Though lacking dialogue, this picture speaks volumes.
