"Africa Parting"

Africa Parting
USA
3.5 OUT OF 4 STARS

True change often requires the complete destruction of a previous way of life.

As a lanky skeletal figure flips through a scrapbook of violence, the horrors of Africa's history are reflected on the pages. Another book breaks down the history of humankind through anthropological study, whittling down races and tool development throughout human evolution.

Feeble and boney, the figure contemplates destroying itself in sacrifice for a new beginning of the continent. With a heart barely sheltered within a bird cage, its only resources are those barely keeping it alive.

The stop-motion animation is dark and curious, inviting discussion. Much of the imagery is up for interpretation, while other moments are stark and blatant in their messages. Animators Robyn Yannoukos and Brian LoSchiavo portray skillful sensibilities that should help to build successful futures as filmmakers.
