To sum up: The Departed did quite well for itself with four big awards. Babel only garnered an award for score, which was pretty surprising considering its scope. Letters from Iwo Jima was left in the dust with only a sound award. Alan Arkin presented an upset with his win for supporting actor, but the other acting awards were all predictable. Pan's Labyrinth did well with three wins, but was worthy of more.
And the show itself was well done. Ellen was funny, the introductions to each award was creative for once, and there were no cheesy dancing numbers, which is always a plus.

Fun night - I thought Ellen was pretty great. Suz and I tied at 9 for number of correct calls in the win category.

WWWAAAYYY too long. Giving movie clips on the technical awards really lengthened the show - and not positively. Used to be, they tried to keep the show to 3 hours - is it now to be four hours?! As Jay Leno so famously said about Wee Willie Clinton "Too much information". A lot of those awards could be given at the earlier luncheon where "uninteresting" (to the public, that is) technical awards are given. And pushing the Supporting Actor/Actress awards to the end was a bummer. Ellen was delightful and fun and was fully enjoyed by all at our party. So...more Ellen, less techie movie clips and awards. As for the acting awards, I was glad that Alan Arkin got Sup. Actor, but, if I had been voting, I would have voted for Jackie Earle Haley. For sheer acting performance, his was by far the best. Helen was on a role and was not to be defeated for the award, but I wished for a tie (as happened once before in Oscar history) with Judi Dench, as her performance was also superb. Forest deserved it and I'm not unhappy with Jennifer's win, although Cate was outstanding, too.
