Did you wake up at 5:30am (PT) to hear the Oscar nominations? Not me.
I refuse to comment on my opinion of the nominees...that may have something to do with the fact that I'm just now getting around to watching everything. [See excuses here] Fortunately, I now live in a town that lives for movies, and I can make up for the Year That Got Away From Me by running out and seeing all sorts of tremendous film. So, slowly but surely (before Feb.25) I will watch as many nominees as possible.
Why do I do this? Do I put great stock in the Academy’s choices? Not really. They’re good at pegging the obvious ones, they’ll sometimes throw in an underdog for good measure and to renew a little faith, but they usually end up picking some big film with more hype than true emotional impact (Crash? Don’t get me started).
And I’ll say this right now: I’m not a big Scorsese fan, so don’t expect a lot of praise from me concerning The Departed and Scorsese “gettin’ what’s due to him.”
So why do I do it? Why do I torture myself in front of the TV all day only to be disappointed? Is it because I like to see all the pretty dresses? Well, a little. Is it because I like to get my Scottish blood in a boil, frustrated over who will get to put a golden statue in their bathroom or receive the gift bag worth more than my car, student loan and lifetime earnings combined? Perhaps.
I think I run this personal movie marathon for the mere love of film. As syrupy as that sounds, I’m still hopeful that one day Foreign Language Film won’t be a category and that we’ll get treated to a short before the feature presentation rather than 10 mindless blockbuster previews that divulge the whole plot.
So if you’ll wait around the bend with a cupful of Gatorade, I’m ready to go.

From someone who is still catching on movies from 5 years ago, I admire your pluck. However, I will not be joining you on your plung into the list of movies nominated...I'll take your word for it and in five years, I'll let you know if you were right or not :)

I too am always behind on watching movies, but always look forward to your comments on who should win/lose. I also know that you really watch the oscars for the pretty dresses :)
