Foreign langage Oscars & Golden Globes

Check out the following flicks that 63 countries have submitted for 2008 Oscar consideration in the foreign language category (to be narrowed to 5 on Jan. 22). 61 (some overlap) qualified for the Golden Globes (nominations announced Dec. 13).

Maybe someday the U.S. will be brave enough to compete on an international level, instead of barring by subtitles. In the meantime, head to the Palm Springs International Film Fest Jan. 3-14, as they have been known to show international nominees.

Grumpy Gus:

You used the word "flicks"??? I can never take you seriously as a critic - or even as a person - again.

Debz:

Very funny, haha

william bak:

1) when does this large foreign film list get trimmed down?
2) who is the front runner?
3) what is (Poland's) Andrzej Wajda's chance of winning with Katyn?

Deborah:

1. The Big 5 are announced on Jan.5; I'm not sure if there's a slimming down somewhere in between now and then, but I doubt it.

2. I'm terribly ashamed to say that I have not seen any of these, which I plan to remedy as soon as I get the chance. If I had to randomly chose the final list based on whispers: 4 Months..., The Unknown, Persepolis, Exiled, 12.

3. I'd say it has a good chance as a nominee, but everyone has been talking about 4 Months.
