Minnesota barns to Scottish cairns

As a staffer of the Palm Springs Int'l Film Society, I'm slightly biased to reporting on the excellence of our January feature fest and August ShortFest (which I became involved with after covering them for the newspaper). When I'm not working those fests, I seem to be the only person in the film community who did not attend Toronto or Cannes or Sundance (well, honestly, who wants to attend Sundance when there's Palm Springs?), but I would prefer to attend quirkier fests and venues.

Like Telluride with its unannounced program and mountain air. The Free Range Film Fest, shown in a barn in Minnesota. The Rooftop Films series which bounces atop NYC buildings. And of course there's the year-round carnival of theatres like Austin's Alamo Drafthouse, which just makes me drool. These are places that aren't concerned about premiering the next big thing or prepping for Oscars, but rather exist for film lovers who know how to have a good time around good films (though sometimes the experience is more fun than the film).

Check out Tilda Swinton's new 8-1/2 day film fest, the Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams Film Fest, in her Scottish hometown of Nairn. Exclusive beanbag seating, early surreal films, silent Ozus, a smattering of shorts and Swinton literally cutting cake for the masses. I'm there.
