Happy New Year, folks!
Time to make grand statements about the impressive person you will become in the New Year. The smarter, buffer, jet-setting starlet that you lie about on your high school reunion survey. You’ll get the pay you deserve for the job you’ve always wanted, and your cats will look at you with a little less disdain.
I, for one, vow to see films, films and more films. 2006 was downright pitiful in that regard, as evident in my lack of reviews. My excuses of a chaotic schedule, moving cross-country and a lack of funds can only go so far. This year, forget the car payments! I’m hitchin’ to the cinema!
To begin the New Year right, I’m heading to the Palm Springs Film Fest. Do I have tickets for the event which officially begins tomorrow? Well, no. But I’m really hoping the funky foreign flicks and documentaries that I gravitate towards will have a few spare tickets. Or at least my pathetic mug will get me in the door before I start crying into my popcorn.
Of course there will be big names, but I get more excited viewing a brilliant movie for which I had no preconceptions. Or a short that gives a shining glimpse of a great filmmaker in the works. I claim to be no movie buff, but rather a movie appreciator. I know a good reel when I see one, and I am always on the lookout for the movie that keeps me in my seat until the lights come up because I’m still digesting its greatness. Now of course I don’t expect all movies to live up to this ideal, but it sure is delicious when they do.
