Art imitates art: killer songs

I dig songs about films. Cake's "End of the movie," The Nields' "Alfred," The Pixies' "Debaser" -- it's all good. Obscure is great, but sometimes you need it in your face. For example...

My friend alerted me to this gem today. The Greenskeepers sing a bouncy little ditty from the perspective of the Silence of the Lambs serial killer.

No More Kings sings a peppy song about the aging actors from Karate Kid who hold onto an unresolved grudge. Nice little Raising Arizona nod to boot.

And in the better-than-the-movie-it-hypes category, I dare you to get Cobra Starship's Snakes on a Plane tribute outta your head:

There's a Lemonheads song called "6ix" that's about the movie "Seven." But don't listen to it if you haven't seen the movie because the song is one big spoiler.

Then there's the Guster song "Come Downstairs and Say Hello," which has a lot of "Wizard of Oz" references in it.

The Decemberists' songs have more plot than a lot of movies. Does that count?

Diane:

Hmm-I think the Greenskeepers is my favorite...it still creeps me out every now and again when I am watching Monk and Cpt. Stotylmeyer (sp?) says something that sounds "it rubs the lotion on its skin" ish.

Deborah:

Yeah, Ted Levine is unfortunately stuck with that character. I wouldn't be able to imagine him as anyone else.
