I’m a documentary geek.
Give me a film fest lineup, and I’m usually more attracted to the docs. On the other end of the scale, I prefer narratives that are brimming with creativity, escaping the norm. And maybe that’s why I like docs. Whereas narratives are searching for something new, docs are more likely to discover the unknown in the everyday life. Everyone has a unique story to tell if you stop and listen.
Which is why I’m so excited about the upcoming season of PBS’s POV series. Opening our eyes to other cultures and hardships is a humbling and necessary experience, and it may be astonishing to learn of situations in our own backyard. Not that all documentaries concern heavy topics -- some are quite quirky and humorous.
No matter the subject, the more we learn about each other, the better people we become.
